Driving is my way of wresting back a small measure of control in a life that has suddenly spiralled out of control.

Stop comparing us. I am not like you and never will be. We are light-years apart. And stop pretending that you don’t understand when the truth is that you don’t want to understand. I see through your helpless and sweetly reasonable act even if nobody else does.

Somebody recently told me that chocolate causes the brain to release endorphins, and that eating chocolate produces the same kind of pleasure an orgasm gives.

That explains why I’ve been consuming more chocolate in the past two months compared to the rest of the year altogether.

Unfortunately, as with addictive drugs, brain receptors eventually become desensitised to the mood-lifting effect of chocolate, so you tend to need more and more to get the same endorphin-raising effects.

Darn. The more I eat, the rounder I’ll be, the unhappier I’ll become, the more I’ll eat. Can anybody say ‘vicious cycle’?

Me: “I wonder whether I’m having a nervous breakdown.”

Friend: “You might like to think you’re having one because of its dramatic value, but you’re not.”

Me: “…”

Friend: “You’re a strong person, you see.”

Me: “What makes you say that?”

Friend: “The way you articulate things on your blog.”

Me: “Eh?”

Friend: “And you’re very sensible at heart.”

Me: “Bah.”

Friend: “I’m just trying to say that you’re in much better shape than you think you are.”

Just learnt that a friend was diagnosed with fourth-stage liver cancer a few months ago. She also recently married.

Although I can’t imagine the kind of pain she’s going through and the emotional, mental or even spiritual turmoil she might be facing, in a way I’m still envious of her because she has found someone who loves her so much he wants be there with her and for her through whatever might come.

Misfortune, pain, illness, suffering, and poverty are true tests of love. And I was thinking, it is amazing that she has someone who loves her like that. At least, no matter how short her life turns out to be, she’s had that experience. She knows she is cherished. She has someone by her side. She’s not alone in facing the bleak, dark, terrifying days.

For that, I could almost envy her.
