Me: “…and so I thought I couldn’t be PMS-ing, because PMS comes before, not during!”

Friend: “But I do notice I get mood swings during that time. I never had bad cramps—”

Me: “Me neither!”

Friend: “—not like my sisters. Some women even have such bad cramps that they have to call in sick to work. Maybe we are stronger physically but weaker emotionally.”

I have this instrumental CD which claims to contain the “most wanted all-time favourite classic music”. One of the tracks contains the “Happy Birthday” song - I suppose because that song is a classic.

What I want to know is, why am I hearing the Mandarin lyrics in my head every time that song plays? I have never even sung “Happy Birthday” to anyone in Mandarin before! Bizarre.

Me: “I’m used to feeling abnormal.”

Male friend: “In what way do you feel abnormal?”

Me: “Too bookish… not ladylike enough… not focused on climbing the corporate ladder… don’t care about making piles of money… won’t have sex before marriage…”

Male friend: “What do you mean, ‘not ladylike enough’? You certainly don’t look very much like a man.”

Me: “It’s got to do with being gentle and demure; the traditional definition, you know.”

Male friend: “How many gentle and demure girls are there left in this world? If you find any, show me, and I’ll be there in an instant!”

Me: (thinking) “Thank you for rubbing salt in the wound!”

Talk about insensitive males…

If you mention three different things in your email and he replies, “That will be fine”, which is he referring to?

The BM subtitles on local television can really suck sometimes. But even when no translation is required, they still manage to get it wrong: on the American Idol results show tonight, Carrie Underwood’s song was labelled “Jesus Take the Will”.

Obviously, the people who write subtitles for Malaysian tv need to get out more and stop living in their own little world.

What do you do when you fall for a guy who’s chased by legions of women? It’s not the insecurity issue at stake here, but the worry that I might become simply one of many; another face in the crowd. I do not want to chase, yet I do want him to know that he has found favour in my eyes. How to walk the tightrope? What will distinguish me from all the rest? I know not.
